LECTURE

WEEK 1: Introduction&Briefing

>In this unit, Mr. Vinod told us about the function and use of typography in different places. The use of typeface depends on artistic concepts and technological development.After Mr. Vinod's talk, he talked about the history of the movable type and modern typographic culture. I believe that modern technology has greatly facilitated typography and it is important to be inspired and learn the skills. Mr. Vinod then talked to us about how to use font size and spacing to get a good design.

Typography: Development / Timeline

Text type classification (Dates of origin approximated to the nearest quarter

century.

Typeforms have developed in response to prevailing technology, commercial

needs, and esthetic trends. Certain models have endured well past the

cultures that spawned them.

The following typeform classification here, based on one devised by

Alexander Lawson only covers the main form of text type.

As with any craft that has evolved over 500 years, typography

employs a number of technical terms. These mostly describe specific

parts of the letterforms. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with

the lexicon.

To knowing a letterform’s component parts make it much easier to

identify specific typefaces.

Week 3  Text Pt 2

Text and displays can be placed indented to demonstrate how objects relate to one another. The paragraph indent, which marks the start of a text block, is the most straightforward indentation style. Standard indentation and extended indentation are two examples.

A single, short line of text at the end of a text column is known as a widow.

Orphan: A brief line of type at the beginning of a new column that is left out.

Italicising, bolding, altering the typeface (san-serifs frequently appear larger than serifs), changing the colour, and other techniques are all examples of ways to highlight text. The text can also be highlighted by adding a coloured field at the back of it.

Week 5 Understanding Letterforms

in the context of evolving modern technology, there exists a myriad ofdiverse printing methods and styles
Print-Caslon Garamond, and Baskerville emerge as the predominanttypographic typefaces of choice due to their exceptional legibility.even when rendered at minuscule font sizes.
The experience of viewing and reading content on screens offersopportunities for augmenting quality and scale. lt permits theenlargement of custom fonts to create expansive and comprehensivedesign schemes
When considering system fonts for screen and web applications, aselection of web-safe fonts proves invaluable. These include OpenSans, Lato, Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Times, Courier New.Courier, Verdana, Georgia, Palatino, and the timeless Garamond.

Specific Feedback ：If there are too many elements, it becomes too complex, and if the font is too intricate, it can be hard to discern what the font is. I can only limit it to changing the font and its position.

General Feedback : The font elements in the design are overly complex, and there are many areas that need improvement.

I listened to Mr. Vinod's guidance and explanation , and I probably knew how to proceed,I intend to make the font simpler, giving it a more distinctive style. Take a look at this 'fire' font; I'm going to transform it to resemble the style of Pokémon.

Week 2:

My design fails to convey the essence of the font and becomes unnecessarily complex, which does not constitute good design.

Regarding the "pause" font, many students opt to modify the central "u," so I need to refine the layout.

When it comes to "split," the emphasis should be on conveying a sense of division rather than altering the font's shape.

Please provide an objective sketch response:

Are the explorations adequate?

Does the presentation align with the word's meaning?

On a scale of 1–5, how strong is the concept?

What improvements can be made?

Week 3:

It's advisable to minimize unnecessary font alterations for enhanced clarity. My "love" and "silence" fonts lack distinctiveness.

The designs for "split" and "pause" are acceptable, but I need to enhance the other two fonts to better convey their intended meanings.

Week 4:

When creating a GIF, it's best to minimize fragmentation by splitting the last "t" while maintaining a smooth transition.

Moderate variations in lettering changes are more effective than overly exaggerated ones.

Week 5:

During our discussions, Mr. Vinod pointed out that the text font in my first design is problematic and requires "all of left." There's also an issue with the title typography.

The second design has no significant issues, but the image is oversized and needs adjustments in leading. It has already undergone some editing.

Reflections:

Experiences:

This marks my second experience delving into typography. I find immense satisfaction in the origin and transformation of fonts. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for fonts, and I've gained insights into basic font design principles.

Observations:

Mr. Vinod consistently emphasizes typography in every class, and we diligently listen. We must uphold strict standards in our designs and cultivate self-critique skills.

Findings:

Typography is omnipresent in our daily lives, and I have come to understand the profound significance of fonts and typography. Mr. Vinod's feedback has significantly influenced my design process
