Video and Sound Production final project
Video and Sound Production final project
October 10, 2025
23/9/2025 - 4/11/2025 (Week 1 - Week 7)
For the final assessment of this module, I worked in a pair to produce a one-minute video incorporating Visual Effects (VFX). The primary objective was to demonstrate proficiency in key post-production techniques, specifically colour grading, audio correction, and VFX integration.
Our workflow emphasized structured planning; we devised a comprehensive production schedule and proposal, which was presented to and approved by Mr. Kannan prior to the execution phase. The link below directs to the final video edit.
Prior to filming, I developed a detailed storyboard using the Google Slides template provided by Mr. Kannan. This storyboard outlined key elements such as camera angles, shot types, and scene progression, and it was also included as part of our final submission. We chose to film at a groupmate’s house, as the location offered ample space and better accommodated our specific shot requirements.
On the first day, we prepared the equipment required for filming and scouted the locations.
Below is all the footage.

After filming is complete, we shall proceed with editing.I'll start by importing all the source material into Premiere Pro and After Effects.
I first created a transition in After Effects, aiming to produce a scene where two people vanish.
Next, I moved on to background replacement, specifically a 'Sky Replacement' technique. The goal was to transform a gloomy city skyline into a surreal, apocalyptic scene reminiscent of Stranger Things.
This process was technically challenging. It involved more than just layering two images; I had to carefully mask out the complex skyline and buildings. The hardest part was 'matching the lighting'—I had to color grade the original city footage to reflect the ominous red glow of the new sky. If the lighting didn't match, the buildings would look like a sticker pasted on top. Despite the steep learning curve, managing to blend these two distinct worlds seamlessly was incredibly satisfying.
For the environment design, I experimented with chroma keying and compositing to alter the mood of the narrative completely. I replaced the dull, overcast sky with a dramatic, fiery atmosphere.
The contrast between the dark silhouette of the figure and the intense red background creates a strong visual impact. While getting the edges of the buildings sharp was a tedious process, the final result successfully conveys a sense of danger and mystery that the original footage lacked. It proves how changing a single element like the sky can completely rewrite the story of a shot."
Crafting fireballs
Bringing a fantasy battle to life in a real-world setting was a fun challenge. We filmed the footage on campus, where the actors had to rely on imagination—reacting to a fireball that wasn't there yet. In post-production, I overlaid the fire assets and adjusted the timing to maximize the impact of the explosion, turning a simple gesture into a powerful magic attack.
The scene after the background has been replaced,It's absolutely brilliant, reminiscent of Stranger Things.
Colour correction
I feel our film suits a darker aesthetic, so our filters might be akin to those used in suspense films.
End with that, the editing of our final project are done!

REFLECTION
Overall, Project 3 was an enlightening journey that allowed me to transition from a passive viewer to an active creator. While the requirement was to produce a one-minute VFX video, the process taught me that the magic of video production lies not just in the special effects themselves, but in how every stage of the pipeline—from storyboarding to color grading—connects to tell a cohesive story.
Pre-production and Planning Unlike previous assignments, I placed a heavy emphasis on pre-production for this project. Prior to filming, I took the initiative to create a detailed storyboard using the Google Slides template. This was a crucial step because it forced me to visualize the scene progression, camera angles, and shot types before we even arrived at the location. Deciding to film at my groupmate’s house was a strategic choice based on this planning, as the space allowed us to execute the specific shots I had envisioned. This preparation significantly reduced our stress on the shooting day, as we had a clear roadmap to follow, ensuring we captured all the necessary footage for the confrontation and sleeping scenes.
The Joy of Post-Production The most rewarding part of this project for me was undoubtedly the post-production phase. While my classmate faced challenges with the acting, I found my true passion in the editing room. I was fascinated by how raw, disconnected footage could be transformed into a cinematic experience through the application of filters, sound design, and visual effects.
I particularly enjoyed crafting the ending sequence. I implemented a split-screen effect to depict a simultaneous awakening, using a parallel montage technique inspired by film transitions. Adjusting the timing so that both characters "woke up" in sync required precise cutting, but seeing the final result gave me a profound sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, applying color grading to set the mood—shifting from the dark, tense atmosphere of the confrontation to the morning light—made me realize that editing is a powerful storytelling tool, not just a technical requirement.
Conclusion In conclusion, Project 3 was more than just a technical exercise; it was a lesson in creative control. It taught me that while VFX (like the effects we used) adds visual flair, the foundation of a good video is built on meticulous planning and thoughtful editing. This experience has built my confidence significantly, and I now feel equipped with both the technical skills and the artistic mindset to tackle more complex video projects in the future.
